This evening, spectators at the Grandplatz Neue Welt witnessed one of the greatest cup sensations in Hamburg soccer in recent years. The Kreisliga team Hamburg Hurricanes won the 3rd round of the Hamburg state cup “Lotto-Pokal” with 3:1 against the Oberliga team HEBC.

The Hurricanes showed their combative style of play right from the opening phase of the game and quickly showed that they would be a match for the favorites from the Oberliga. The hosts, led by coach Corentin Nehemie Cleuziat, started the game with high intensity and capitalized on their first two opportunities. John Damisa Raji put the Hurricanes ahead in the 7th minute.

Before HEBC could recover from the initial shock, the underdogs struck again. Joshua Thomas Sykes Rymer made it 2:0 in the 17th minute.

HEBC tried to turn the tide in the second half and pushed for the equalizer. They finally scored in the 67th minute when Johann Magnus Buttler slotted the ball into the net from the penalty spot.

However, hopes of a penalty shoot-out were dashed in stoppage time when John Damisa Raji was on hand again to score his second goal and put the lid on the Hurricanes' sensational victory.
